Where the Northwoods Locals Go for Great Pizza
Dinners Up North should be free of fuss. Whether you’re watching the game, gabbing with friends, enjoying dinner out with the kids, or kicking up your feet and relaxing at home, having pizza for dinner this weekend is a no-brainer. Here in the Northwoods, we’ve got a wide variety of pizzas to savor—from down-home, traditional pies to true gastronomic delights, served up on deep-dish, hand-tossed, or cracker-thin crusts. There’s a pizza here for everyone. We asked locals about their go-to pizza. Here’s a round-up of the oft-mentioned favorites.
Creative and Craveable
Outboards – Tomahawk
Outboards’ menu is stocked with delicious pizza options. You can build your own with the variety of toppings available or choose from their specialties. Try the Bacon Mac n Cheese Pizza, the ’Sconnie (topped with Wisconsin beer cheese sauce, brat slices, and sauerkraut—hello, Wisconsin!); or the Reuben Pizza (featuring slow-cooked corned beef, thousand island dressing, sauerkraut, and mozzarella).
Twin Bay Resort – Tomahawk
If you can’t get enough pizza while you’re in Tomahawk, head over to Twin Bay Resort. Their homemade pizza recipe has the stuff of legends since 1954. Twin Bay Resort takes pride in their truly homemade pizzas: they make their own dough, sauce, and sausage and grind and blend their own cheese. You can build your own pizza with your favorite toppings or choose from their specialty pizzas. With choices like the Meat Lovers, the Taco Pizza, the Cheeseburger Pizza, and the Gyros Pizza, we can’t decide which one to order next!
Aqualand Ale House – Boulder Junction
If you’re seeking a little something special for pizza night, head over to Aqualand Alehouse, where they wood-fire your flatbread pizza to perfection. Among the delectable choices are the Porketta (featuring pulled pork and Giardiniera—an Italian relish), the Steak House (with shaved prime rib, gorgonzola, and garlic horseradish), and the Mediterranean (boasting pesto, artichokes, kalamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes, chicken, and feta).
Know Where Your Pizza Grows
Stoney Acres Farm – Athens
You have just six more chances this year to make your way to Stoney Acres Farm, where you can enjoy your pizza right where the ingredients were grown. Also available is beer made from hops, wheat, and barley grown on-site and brewed right there on the farm, too! Stoney Acres serves pizza every Friday and Saturday night from until November 9. If you don’t have the opportunity to make it out there this fall, put it on your must-do list when they start farm-to-pizza nights back up in April.
Family-Owned Pizzerias with a History of Excellence
Pizza Haven – Rhinelander
Pizza Haven has been receiving rave reviews from the Rhinelander community since 1969. This family pizza biz offers great options that keep locals coming back for more. Pies range in size from a 7-inch personal pizza to a party-size 17-by-23-inch pizza. Select your preferred crust from your traditional white crust, oat bran, or whole wheat options. Choose a specialty pie—including the Hawaiian deluxe, Italian garlic, and Reuben deluxe—or build your own with Pizza Haven’s wide range of toppings.
Butch’s Pizza North – Eagle River
Butch’s Pizza has been making high-quality homemade pizzas for over 40 years. Butch’s takes pride in providing a generous serving of toppings and real, honest ingredients—no fillers here. You can dine in, take out your pizza, or have it delivered. Choose among their specialties—such as the Mac & Cheese, Fire Alarm (featuring sausage, pepperoni, crushed red peppers, and jalapenos) and Barbeque Chicken Pizza—or build your own.
Greenhill’s Log Cabin – Conover
Greenhill’s Log Cabin may be your new under-the-radar favorite place to take out a pie. Build your own with your favorite toppings, or devour a signature pizza. They’ve got The Special, Meat Lovers, and The Works.
Alexander’s Pizza – Minocqua
If you’re staying in the Minocqua area, Alexander’s is a great choice for dine-in, carry-out, or take-and-bake pizza. Alexander’s has all your favorite toppings, ranging from pepperoni and sausage to pineapple and banana peppers. Each pizza is made individually to order with freshly made dough and baked on a stone hearth.
