Whether you are preparing a delicious holiday spread for your family or you want to bring home something to enjoy in front of the fireplace on a cold, lazy weekend morning, nothing will hit the spot quite like a small-town, old-fashioned bakery. Here are some of the beloved bakeries you will find in northern Wisconsin and U.P. Michigan.

BC Cakes & More – Rhinelander and Crandon

BC Cakes & More offers more delicious cupcake options than you ever thought was possible. They will design and create a unique cake for your upcoming special occasion. Some of their amazing frosting choices are peanut butter, white chocolate raspberry, chocolate mocha, cotton candy, chai tea, and maple. Cake offerings include both basics, such as chocolate and vanilla, and more extravagant options like maple bacon, dulce de leche, and caramel apple. They also have amazing filling choices, like coconut cream, oreo cream, and cake batter. They even offer pupcakes for canine cake lovers! What’s more, they take special requests for flavors not listed on their menu, so you (and your pup) are sure to find something you will love at BC Cakes & More!

Cherie’s Sweet Sensations – Tomahawk

According to Cherie’s Sweet Sensation’s Facebook page, Cherie bakes not only “for the love of it” but also “for the art of it.” Passion and artistry are self-evident in the delicious offering of cheesecakes, cookies, bars, quick breads, scones, muffins, and cakes you will find in the bakery case at in this Tomahawk bakery. Find the perfect dessert for an upcoming wedding, birthday, anniversary, or holiday…or treat yourself just because.

Eagle Baking Company – Eagle River

Eagle Baking Company specializes in artisan breads, pastries, cakes, and pies. They also make deli sandwiches to order. Before a snowshoeing adventure on Eagle River’s backwoods trails, fuel up with The Snowshoe, a sandwich featuring roast beef, swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato—which, like all of their deli sandwiches, is served with chips, a pickle, and a freshly baked cookie.

Golden Harvest Market – Rhinelander

If you are searching for organic, made-from-scratch, baked goods, Golden Harvest Market will be your go-to bakery in the Northwoods. They use certified organic stone-ground whole wheat flour, extra virgin olive oil or butter, and agave nectar or honey instead of corn syrup in their recipes. The organic seeds, nuts, and rye berries are even freshly ground as they are needed. In addition to their sandwich breads and dinner rolls, they offer quick breads like pumpkin bread and banana bread. Their glorious selection of pies includes Dutch apple, pecan, and pumpkin. They also offer granolas, biscotti, cookies (from ginger snaps to peanut butter chocolate chip), bars, and cupcakes, as well as cream pies and cheesecakes upon request. During this holiday season, call ahead to make sure your favorite dessert is available at Golden Harvest.

Norske Nook – Rice Lake, Osseo, Hayward, DeForest

Each of Norske Nook’s four locations has an in-house bakery that provides a wonderful variety of homemade pies and desserts that you can either pick up from the shop or order online to have delivered right to your doorstep. Norske Nook is best known for their award-winning, made-from-scratch pies with hand-rolled crusts. Whether your favorite is blueberry or apple, pumpkin cream cheese or pecan, you’ll find the pie for you at Norske Nook. This bakery also features traditional Scandinavian desserts as well as Norwegian cookies, pecan rolls, muffins, breads, Norwegian flatbreads, and lefse.

Randall Bakery – Wakefield, Michigan

Randall Bakery offers baked goods of all sorts. They specialize in breads (from their trademark Italian and Old World Artisan French breads to an everyday hot dog bun), but they also have a splendid assortment of sweets: danishes, fried doughnuts, turnovers, fruit tortes, and their ever-popular made-from-scratch cookies. But if you need an excuse to stop in at Randall Bakery in the form of a substantial, balanced meal, order a savory pasty as a prelude to your dessert. They’ve got not only traditional and Cornish but also jalapeño, veggie, and breakfast pasties. Enjoy them served hot on Thursdays, or take home a pre-baked frozen pasty to enjoy at home.
