Apple Harvest Is Almost Here! Pick Your Own Apples at One of Our Region’s Beautiful Apple Orchards.

Have you noticed the sun peeking over the horizon a little later each morning, the new chill in the air, and the maple leaves just beginning to turn crimson? You know what that means: ready or not, autumn is fast approaching.

But lucky for us, that also means that apple harvest season is near!

Starting in September, many orchards will open their doors to visitors who are excited to get a glimpse of the workings of the farm, experience hayrides, pick their own apples, peruse the wares at the farm store, and even taste the freshly pressed cider at the orchard. The rows of apple trees reaching out over the gently sloping land—framed by colorful foliage and shimmering lakes beyond—make a stunning scene, so apple orchards are often popular places for photoshoots and weddings over the next several weeks, too.

Are you looking for a great place to pick your own apples this season? Here are five of our top picks in northern Wisconsin.

Helene’s Hilltop Orchard – Merrill

This beautiful orchard offers pick-your-own and pre-picked apples. Varieties include Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Cortland, Zestar, and RiverBelle. Helene’s Hilltop Orchard prepares impressive 10-inch apple pies, too (choose from caramel apple, double-crust apple, or Dutch apple—yum, yum, and yum!), so we know we won’t have to tell you twice to check out their farm store before you leave the orchard grounds.

Rock Ridge Orchard – Edgar

Rock Ridge Orchard will be offering weekend wagon rides and other kids’ activities—in addition to their pick-your-own apples and delicious homemade goodies at their retail store—starting September 21.

Grandview Orchard – Antigo

Grandview Orchard is admirably going organic and holistic! On Saturdays starting September 6, you’ll have the opportunity to pick your own apples at this orchard. Be sure to check back for updates because on selected dates, Grandview will also offer horse-drawn tours and other special events!

Did you know that the unique micro-climate of Bayfield sets up the perfect conditions for prime apple growing? In fact, there is even an area of Bayfield called the Fruit Loop because of the number of wonderful fruit orchards found there.

Blue Vista Farm – Bayfield

Blue Vista Farm is but one of the many fine orchards in the Bayfield area. Visit Blue Vista Farm to pick your own Cortland, Gala, Liberty, Red Free, Zestar, Sweet 16, and Honeycrisp apples, now through mid-October.

Sunset Valley Orchard – Bayfield

This picturesque 25-acre orchard grows 10 varieties of apples. Grab a bag of pre-picked apples or pick your own. At Sunset Valley Orchard, you are invited to hike along the rustic trail, have a picnic in the orchard, or simply enjoy the landscape. Make sure to stop by their retail store, the Apple Branch, to shop for gifts and unique collectibles!

If you love apples but, rather than picking your own, prefer to enjoy them already baked in pies, fried in donuts and fritters, or pressed and distilled in ciders, be sure to stay tuned for an upcoming article about our hand-picked places to find amazing apple sweets and drinks on the Up North Action blog.
